Art and Michelle Roaming Royals

About Us

We’re Art and Michelle – and we’re probably just like you.

We had both lived very full lives, and have vibrant histories with many ups and downs. Then we met and fell in love.

One day, on a road trip from Colorado to Florida, Art said those (in)famous words: “Honey, hear me out…”

We had been passing so many RVs while on the road to mom’s house.  A frequent topic of conversation was travel, coupled with spending time with loved ones. This was was what we missed the most during the epidemic.  We already knew that we could work remotely, and a comfortable life on the road seemed like the perfect opportunity. Never mind that neither one of us had ever set foot in a motorhome.

“Let’s live in an RV!”

And that’s how the journey began.

OUR Travel Experiences

What’s it like to live your life on the road?

In some ways, it’s exactly the same as not living on the road. We wake up and make the bed. We feed and walk the dogs. We work. We grocery shop and cook and do dishes. However, in other ways, it does not at all compare being stationary in a “sticks ‘n’ bricks” home.

On a daily or weekly basis, we work at a different local café, we have an ever-changing view from our front door, and the dogs get the most wonderful walks. There are so many lovely people and experiences we get to enjoy. We try out new cultures and scenes and cuisines on the regular. We have the luxury of staying as long as we want, wherever we want. And we can move on again when we’re ready for more.

Was it hard to get started?

Some people say the hardest part is downsizing – and there’s definitely some truth to that. We had both been married prior to meeting, living in huge homes with tons of stuff. Stuff that had been collected over our (ahem) considerable years. When we moved in together, it was already a mammoth job to downsize everything we had from two large households into one smallish condo.

Even from there, though – living in under 200 square feet of space with a weight limit seemed a daunting task. However, once you get started, it can be pretty exciting to purge all but the necessities for an opportunity to go wherever life takes you. It was exhilarating to begin anew, entirely unencumbered and appreciative of the joy of living only with what truly matters.

I’ve always wanted to do this – but how?

Regarding specifics and logistics, we are thankful for a strong real estate market in Denver when we sold our home (within 24 hours, for over the reasonable asking price, thanks to our amazing Realtor!) This did help fund our initial purchases of the motorhome and the campground membership, which we’ll share the details of later.

Additionally, our employment had come to an unceremonious end when our employer stopped paying us. What felt like a devastating blow became a transformative event; we started our own company. Our business allows us to work absolutely anywhere we have access to wifi or cell data, whether that’s at local coffee shops or at home, sitting outside in our hammock chairs, enjoying a world-class view!

Building Memories

Ultimately, we couldn’t have done this without support.

The friends we have met in each place have enhanced our lives exponentially. We have found what we consider to be our family, or tribe, in two different communities.

The first group we consider as our tribe is the Xscapers. We are members of this fantastic community of RVers, and it is with them that we are venturing into Mexico for several months this winter. We have many friends within this group and frequently meet up with them across the country.

The other community essential to us is naturists! At every clothing-optional campground we have been to, people have been warm and genuine, exactly what we seek in friends. There isn’t a single clothing-optional experience we have had where we didn’t make friends that we still keep in touch with. Social media has been an invaluable tool to accomplish that until we can meet again in person.

WOW!
